Hi Jim.
I haven`t had much time for browsing SN recently, so this is my first post in a while to comment on this cracker of a painting. Your tones and hues, and multiple shades of blue are just wonderful, and the battered Cromdale is very well complemented by the backdrop of the excellent headlands.
By coincidence, a couple of years ago I researched the very same ship for a lady living in South Harris. Hanging as a feature on her living room wall was the top section of an old wooden sea-chest, and on the timbers was a painting of the Cromdale. If I can find the photo I took of it at the time, I will post it on the site, and with your permission Jim, could I e-mail her a copy of your own rendition of the Cromdale`s demise?

Welcome back, Harris Donald! I was about to alert the Stornoway Coastguard to search for you!!! The Hebridean Brotherhood is strong! Once again, I agree completely with your comments. You needn't worry about your absence. I am sure my comments have been the same as the ones you would have made!!! Enjoy the wonderful art that has appeared since you were last on site, though! As soon as I saw this, I said, 'The ship 'Cromdale'!' Beautiful, Jim. Very well done. Your ability to handle so many different kinds of ships is astonishing - and humbling. I have so much to learn. Tiree Donald.

I really like these panoramic scenes. Did anyone get out alive? It looks a repeat of the Royal Charter wreck.
even better than a photo.
cheers

A fine painting Jim, and a sad sight for anyone with salt in their veins.

Thanks for your comments folks, I didn't really research this one, I just saw a couple of pictures of her breaking up and had a go. I remembered that they sometimes towed the Lifeboat by tug to the wreck, so put that in as well, so its more a typical scene than an actual one.

Scary that groundswell sweeping over the ship (and believable), you would not be able to cling to anything within it. And brave lifeboatmen, the risk they often put themselves in were real.

All crew were saved and were able to return at low water to retrieve their belongings. She grounded in thick fog on 23 May 1913 on the rocks below Bass Point, Cornwall quite near to the Coastguard lookout, so her distress rockets were seen at once and the Lizard and Cadgwith Lifeboats quickly attended. She grounded with every sail set, so provided a dramatic sight when the fog lifted. She broke up in a gale a week later.

Thank you Jim. E-mail has been sent, along with a description of your painting`s origin.

Donald, thank you also for your (re)welcoming comments, and having had a quick recce of past pix there has certainly been no drop in standards whatsoever. By the way, your MV Claymore model is superb!!
