Yuen Chau ex Vibeka Maersk

Yuen Chau ex Vibeka Maersk

  • Ian
YUEN CHAU anchored at Singapore 1977. Ex VALENTINE ex VIBEKE MAERSK. 4,187 tons built 1948 at Odense. In 1977 Vibeke Mærsk was traded twice more. First she was sold by the Hong Kong Islands Shipping Co. (this photo) and renamed Sea Speway of Panama. Later in 1977 she was sold again and renamed Huey Fong (reg Panama) but owned by a company in Hong Kong.
Huey Fong was mentioned in the press when, on 25th December 1978, she picked up about 2500 Vietnamese refugees from nine overcrowded small boats in the open sea and brought them in to Hong Kong. Huey Fong was laid up in Hong Kong in January 1979 and during the Summer of 1980 she was broken up at Hong Kong. Info from Jesper.

In 1977 - perhaps in connection with this photo - ex " Vibeke Mærsk " was traded two more times. At first she was sold by the Hong Kong Islands Shipping Co. ( this photo ) and renamed " Sea Speway " of Panama. Later in 1977 she was sold again and named " Huey Fong " of Panama but owned by a company in Hong Kong.

" Huey Fong " was mentioned in the press when, on 25th December 1978, she picked up about 2500 Vietnamese refugees, from nine overcrowded small boats, at open sea and brought them into Hong Kong.

From the rescue operation http://www.immd.gov.hk/40/eng/mil/70s/mil_70s_iv.html - please zoom in on the small photo to the right.

" Huey Fong ", ex " Vebeke Mærsk " was laid up in Hong Kong in January 1979 and during the Summer of 1980 she was broken up, also in Hong Kong.
