It might be interesting to note that ZPMC has recently purchased their first VLCC for conversion to a crane carrier. The CRYSTAL BEAUTY ex FRONT TOBAGO was sold for $14.5 million which, at 60 metre beam, has even more stabilty to carry all those cranes :)

Fred, who knows more about ship construction, GM and stability than I ever will, has written wisely on the subject, and I do apologise if I gave that impression that I am anxious about the stability of the modern ocean liner…. He is of course wholly correct that the buoyancy (and GM) of the Queen Mary 2 is greatly in excess of that of a loaded tanker, which is why she can support the weight of all those people (and their doughnuts) of and on her upper decks. - I was merely taking a liberty and making fun of the Queen Mary 2, expressing my personal lack of interest in making a passage on her; but not for reasons of her stability, but more the concern of having to rub shoulders with folk that are not really my cup of tea… She is as you say more than up to the task of remaining upright, delivering what is requires of her and not tipping the freight into the ocean.. just like ZPMC ships…

Mark,
This could be an opening for a particularly specific 'niche market' cruise ship, based on the design of a 5000grt (pressurised) gas tanker....
