Happy 84th, Alan. I will not be catching up with your literary output or your age! Have a great time celebrating and good fortune to you and yours in the sunny southwest.

    Hi Alan

Just bought your book Merchant Navy Apprentice 1951 -1955

Havn't read all yet but have looked at the South Pacific section

I was an apprentice from May 64, did three Copra runs before joining Hazelbank Tweedbank and Testbank serving as third and second officer before leaving Feb 70. I kept a personal log book and have dates ports etc from day one so found your accounts great. As to Washington and Fanning Island did that in April 65 going backwards and forwards between Fanning and Washington 5 times. I think we were the first ship to see the Southbank after her grounding. I was on MV Fleetbank as was second apprentice at the time. Keep up the good work sorry we are all getting older

    Dear Alan
Sounds hairy !! I have no head for heights any more. When on the Conway we climbed the rigging routinely.
    Keep well and God bless
    Sid ( just turned 90 !!)
