Oakmore
 
Anyone out there sail on the Oakmore,she was Johnstone Warren and had been a German Vessel taken over as reparation after the war.
Ice Breaker bow and no wheel on the bridge,just a stb'd and port button.Cabins bigger then average for the time.

7-cyl. 2 S.C.S.A. (650 x 1,250mm) oil engine by F. Krupp Germaniawerft A.G., Kiel.
7.1939: Completed as LEVANTE by Nordseewerke Emden GmbH, Emden, (Yard No. 190) for Deutsche Levante Linie, Bremen.
5.1945: Captured at Oslo as a prize, (Prince Line Ltd., appointed as interim managers), London and renamed EMPIRE KENT.
9.1945: Taken over by Ministry of War Transport, (T. & J. Harrison Ltd., Liverpool, appointed managers).
24.7.1946: Sold to Johnston Warren Lines Ltd., (Furness, Withy & Company Ltd., managers) and renamed OAKMORE.
13.4.1967: Arrived at Aviles for demolition by Desgauces y Salvamentos S. A.

Did eight trips on her 1964 until 1967. Easy going ship as far as the engine room went, salt water cooled, diesel oil fuel with gas operated fuel pumps.

Always wanted to sail on her. Visited her during a port call to Glasgow...how true were the stories Jim, of the "Tunnel Ghost" and the bullet hole in one of the desks. I recall she was scrapped in Contstanza as I sailed with one opf the Juniors who took her there (Dave King?)

Never met the gentleman, maybe someone had too many beers and saw old Charlie Ferns, aka Furness Ferns the old fireman and started the tale. Never saw any bullet hole in any desks, there was plenty of rust holes in the funnel. The Oakmore was scrapped in spain not Constanza, a regular port of call on the Black Sea run.

I sailed on M.V. Oakmore (Furness Withy) for 6 weeks in Summer 1957. My father wanted to convince me that I did not really want to go to sea and arranged this trip during my school holidays! I signed on as a "Supernumerary" and occupied one of the 12 passenger cabins on the stbd fwd corner of the accommodation. He (Dad) was proved wrong and I signed up with Esso Petroleum Co. as an Engineer Cadet in 1959. I never regretted my first career, it "set me up for life".

M.V. Oakmore (7 cyl Krupp Diesel engine) was indeed a German ship during WW2 and was sunk by the RAF (I believe). She was re-floated and a 300mm diameter shell hole in the steering Gear compartment was covered over and welded up but it was still clear for all to see. There was probably other evidence of damage that I did not see!

I enjoyed my "First Trip" and was treated very well by the engine room staff and crew. I was worked hard and enjoyed that too. Oakmore was the only motor ship I sailed on as all the Esso tankers I sailed on were steamships. The coasters (Esso Lambeth and Esso Preston) had Steam Reciprocating engines and all the others steam turbines. I most enjoyed the smaller deep sea ships (36k DWT, 46kdwt and the Flagship Esso Warwickshire c/w an Air conditioned Control Room.) Warwickshire was the least interesting - nothing went wrong! Boring Boring.
