Recognize this ship?

My dad worked for a company that made underwater equipment such as cameras, lights, etc. that were on many submersibles and they also made early ROVs in the 1960's and 70's. These are some unlabeled slides in my dad's collection. I'm trying to work out where this is and what this ship is. It In the background, a building appears to say "Maritime Research Center, {something} and Test". The first photo could be the port in which it was located at the time, which I don't recognize.

I forgot to add that the photos are from January 1979.

The ship is the Apache, later CSO Apache, IMO: 7723613 - A pipelayer.

I used to sail into the port... in the 70s.

Like most ports a lot of these type of ship laying pipes, cable etc. The only one I remember was GLOMAR CHALLENGER.

That was quick, and helpful. The picture of LA harbor was a red herring. He was working in Pasadena at the time, so that would have been taken on his way, likely to Galveston. The type of ship makes sense. A lot of their customers at that time were involved in offshore drilling and inspection. Thanks for the help.
