there was a 4th mate in Blue Funnel 1964 called Ian Smart came from around Barrow in Furnace. I think his father was a Master in Barrows

boiler blew up

I sailed on the Theseus in 1965 when one of the boilers blew up homeward bound from Freemantle resulting in a slow passage home.
Great ship to sail on however and a very happy crew.
