IIRC his name was Wilf, usually called "Old Wilf". I don't think he ever saw the light of day he was so pale - continually reading either in his cabin or on watch and he would have two showers a day! Sometimes I would go home when the ship was in Shoreham, my parents lived in Croydon on the Brighton line so I could get there pretty quickly, but in Blyth there was me and the nightwatchman! The cook would come back and set up meal for me and the watchman and then go home, although sometimes he gave me a lift to a pub and let me find my own way back!
