During my tenure in the RN (1963-75) as a Signalman, I was based at HMS Mercury 1966 - 67, and was drafted to AFD 60 as she, having just been built, was ready to be towed to Faslane in Scotland. I was billeted in HMS Victory (now Nelson) waiting for the "towing weather", which finally arrived during my second week there. Aboard the 60 there were approximately 20 dockyard personnel, 4 chefs (who were borrowed from one of London's prestigious hotels), an SBA and myself. The trip was uneventful and pleasant with calm seas and above average food. I do not remember the 2 tugs which towed us to our destination.
