Jeddah in mid-1970s

Dear all,

I'm finishing up a book on US-Saudi relations in the 1970s and have a question for anyone who visited Jeddah in those years.

I've read many stories about the chaos at the Jeddah port around 1974-75. The Saudi economic boom meant that the demand for imports was so great that ships had to wait for weeks or months to unload their cargo. Cement was offloaded by helicopter because it was urgently needed for construction projects.

I'd love to talk to anyone who worked on those ships or visited the Jeddah port at that time. I'm curious how the crews passed the time, what the port looked like, general impressions of Jeddah -- any kind of details like that. I'm happy to get your thoughts on or off the record, by email or Skype.

With best regards,
