Hi Mike
As far as I can see there was nobody called Robert Pannel killed on the Royston.
However I did come across a Bob Pannel, who was C/E on the trials barge 'Longbow' 1986-89. He was from near Swansea, would this be the same guy. Leo would perhaps remember Bob from the same time?
Mike

Royston Grange

The late Royston Grange Yes it was very sad .I stood by her as junior engr in London 1969 and 1971.It seems a lifetime ago I was on the Shaftesbury at the time of the tragedy on a UK River Plate run.I took the photo in Victoria Dock tidal basin.

Royston Grange Tragedy

While I was a student I did a single voyage on the Hardwicke Grange.
Bill Townsend was one of the quarter masters. His fatherly advice at the time contributed greatly in making the trip a wonderful and educational experience for me. It was a very sad and shocking day when I later read the news of the disaster and that Bill was one of the victims. Recently I found this site and have read several posts looking for a casualty list. I hope the link below will be of use. It is in Spanish but the names are there as well as some photographs. RIP to all who were lost more than 45 years ago - but not forgotten.

Bill was a great joker.

I remember he told one lad, who was returning very late, that if he had been with one of the ladies he should urinate in a glass and squeeze his balls,if his pee was clear and his balls hurt he was free from disease. Every morning you could hear him filling the glass, a sigh of relief seeing all was clear then a scream. The bulkheads on the Royston were not exactly sound proof.
