Pirates attacks are down in the first quarter of 2006 due to increased vigilance, a maritime body says.

The decrease is more likely to be as a result of non-reporting of attacks. There is now considerable pressure on masters not to report pirate attacks, even when seafarers have been killed or seriously injured. Shipowners are very afraid that public disclosure of pirate attacks would have a negative effect on shipper confidence and lead to higher insurance premiums. The lives of third world seafarers do not feature in their calculations.
