My dad was at Worcester.

Hello,
I got interested in the forum through a friend of my father's. My dad was an American who was raised in the Orient and living in Japan when he enrolled at HMS Worcester at I believe 15. I am checking with them on the exact details.
After Worcester his first voyage was as an apprentice on the Garthpool. According to him she was the last four masted , square rigged, sailing vessel sailing under the English flag. Unfortunately for him it grounded on its way to Australia and was lost.
He eventually made his way to the States where he sailed for various lines eventually sailing as Master aboard many Mississippi Steamship Lines vessels. The company was also known as Delta Line. He came ashore for the company during WWII and retired from the company as its Marine Supt in 1973. He died in 1989.
Through him I have inherited a true love of the sea and the vessels that sail it. Great site. I look forward to visiting.

Welcome to the crew.
You'll find quite a few Worcesters around the ship as you look around.
Enjoy the voyage.

Dear pcww,

I have recently sent you an email about the last Garthpool voyage; my great grand father Christopher Bedford Steel (1907-1943) was an apprentice with your father; Steel was nick named 'Scuppers' as he took to sleeping in the fo'c'sle (details on my posts in the forums).

But I thought I'd add this adendum; I've worked out you are the son of Henry W. Kinney as someone else posted a message about being a friend of his, Bill Grusich, but he hasn't replied to my email yet. I worked it out when I re-read both posts and found you both mention the Delta line.

I look forward to hearing from you

Bye for now

Jessica Stella Fox

'Scuppers' Great grand daughter
