I would be quite happy to step back in time and be sailing again in GLENPARK or SCOTSPARK!

Good to see the Diamond D on a funnel and great that the old names are still alive.

Denholm Bulkers

'Scotspark' and SSM's 'Cape Horn' discharging phosphate from Nauru Island, at Kwinana (Freemantle's W.A. bulk port) Spring 1981'ish. Not sure if this was the trip also with the Glenpark over at the Grain berth. And a Esso tanker over at the oil berth.

ps You can get great clear views of this area and big bulkers alongside from Google Earth (best in Chrome browser)

Nice shot!

Was in Kwinana in December 1979 in the 'Flagship'.... WELLPARK. Loaded Pig Iron for discharge at Tsingao and Hisinkang.

Newcastle with grain to Kuwait. Pigs from Kwinana to China and then down to load manganese at Groote Eylandte. Four months and never got ashore. :-(

One and half trips Japan>Nauru>Kwinana>along the bottom and to Port Pirie and Newcastle ores (great runs ashore!) for Korea & Japan - and then same again, back down. Home from Perth. Had even got ashore at Nauru :-), think we were there a couple of days the first time and nearly a fortnight the second. So I've been across the Line a few times as its only 12 miles South. A favourite pic of us Night Loading on the Scotspark attached - which appeared in one issue (rear?) of the Denholm News.

I remember that photo! What where you doing up in the crow's nest in middle of the night? I went up in Glenpark steaming through the Straits of Gib. Nav light failed at 0200 hrs! Cold and windy, but a beautiful view of the lights of Gib. No, didn't take a photo.

My two photos of SCOTSPARK from aloft. Ballast voyage Shields to Geelong 1971... 6 week passage. Lovely!

There was a great photo in Denholm News. SCOTSPARK and GLENPARK together in Duluth or Detroit? Someone pasted a large 'L' (learner plate) on the transom. I believe it was taken by a professional photo for the company and did not spot the 'L' until later!

Went up the Lakes in both of these ships. In those days these were the largest 'salties' to use the Welland Canal.

What year were you in SCOTSPARK?

Stephen

PS: The holds had been whitewashed before I joined before loading salt from Constanza. Looked clean, but when we were at Geelong to load grain the surveyors were not happy about the whitewash. It was flaking off and a bit of sweeping up was necessary. Note the grabs. They had been freshly painted. For the salt cargo the mates, Gerry Staub 2/O and Robbie Morgan 3/O had to load cargo... with the crew. The stevedores would not touch the grabs. The crew and the mates picked up a bit of overtime. :-) As built the grabs sat on cradles on the deck. It was found that some of the rams on the hydraulics were starting to rust. At Shields, new cradles were fitted and the grabs were kept 'open' and the rams were 'enclosed' and so did not rust. So... 1969 to end 1971 is one way to date a photo.

Glenpark 1972

You might be interested in this short clip temporarily posted on Utube, taken on the Glenpark about 1972. The super8 film is now in rather poor nick. She’d finished a six-month time charter running from Port Alfred to Chaguaramus. Thence a voyage with grain ex.St. John NB to kandla. Not much good these days with names of shipmates. I have other, but poor quality super8 taken during a spell with Denholm’s in the early 70’s, tho’ find SN-TV doesn’t accept uploads these days.
