PERSEVERANCE (Stern Trawler)

Hello,

I`m searching for information of the former 'PERSEVERANCE'. It`s a stern Trawler who was Panama flagged. Originaly build in 1933 as 'PRINS WILLEM I' a ferry who served in the province of Zeeland, the Netherlands. After she was sold in 1972 the ship was rebuild to stern trawler at Dunkerque (1974) and after a couple of fishing adventures she caught fire infront of the English coast and was finaly laid up in Holland and scrapped.

Who can tell me more ??

Ricardo

That would be the ferry from Terneuzen to Hodensekerke, I remember the ferry closing, in late 1971 I think it was.

You`re right

Yes that was indeed the ferry who served between Terneuzen-Hoedekenskerke till 1972 when the service stopped and the ship is sold. She served on this route with her 2 sister vessel, Koningin Emma and Oosterschelde who are still active in Holland as a floating restaurant in Zwolle and a sport fishing ship who sails from Scheveningen.

After the ferry closed at Terneuzen, the Zeedijk (Main Sea Dike), was straightend out a bit and raised to Delta Height. The old terminal was turned into a small yacht and boat marina, it's quite popular in the summer. For the professionals, it's about a mile to port as you approach the Gent Canal entrance from the Schelt/Schelde.

re: Perseverance

The place is now called 'Oude Veerhaven' (former ferryharbour in English). It`s one of the best places to photograph ships passing the River in and outbound to the port of Antwerp.

The place where the ferry docked is still there, but last year they removed the pontoon where she berthed alongside. The bridge is still there.
