SS La Blanca

Hi

As an amateur genealogist from Sweden I stumbled over the sinking of SS La Blanca off Dartmouth Devon UK 23 Nov 1917. A brother of my maternal grandfather perished in the sinking and I'm trying to find out as much as possible about the last voyage of SS La Blanca.

BR
Anders

La Blanca Sinking

Hi Anders

Very interested in your post. I think I may also have lost an ancestor( James Stow) in the La Blanca sinking but I am not absolutely sure, I have a family note of his date of death (23/11/1917) and that he was "Torpedoed by U96" I think that U96 did sink SS La Blanca on that day but I do not know if that U boat sank anything else that day.

I have read that only two peple died in the sinking. If that is so it would be a strange coincidence for us both to have lost an ancestor.

I know that La Blanca was a meat carrier trading with Argentina but I would like to hear any more info that anyone has.

Hi Anders I misssed the great reply to your note from Hugh McLean. We do share a sad link, my ancestor( Josph (not James as I said) was my great grandmothers brother, small world is it not? Like you I am an amateur genealogist. Where in Sweden are you?. I spent some happy years working in Gotteborg though it did mean flying back and forward to UK nearly every week.

I am often in London and will visit the memorial mentioned if possible photograph the entry for Joseph. Would you like a photograph of the entry for poor Axel?

La Blanca sinking.

I believe my Grandfather, Sylvester Mathews, was the second mate on La Blanca when she was sunk.

My father told me that Sylvester always kept his bag packed and after retrieving it he found that the last lifeboat had left. Luckily they returned for him, but afterwards he bought a pistol just in case next time thy wouldn't return and needed some persuasion. After his death my father surrendered the pistol to the police.

He lost his discharge book in the sinking. I have his replacement book. There is a note that it replaces one lost with his ship.
