I think these ships belonged to John Holt & Co of Liverpool but there are so many Holts. Lamport & Holt, Alfred Holt etc.

Holt Line was known as the Guinea Gulf Line whose office was in Liverpool. If I remember rightly their ships were named after family members.
Regards
John

The Guinea Gulf Line was taken over by Elder Dempster. The ships were disposed of as they were all steamships which did not fir in with ED's preference for motorships. The Line continued but with several ED's ships transferred to it.
It finally disappeared when it became part of Ocean.

They had one really good-looking ship, Rose of Lancaster, that was in truth owned by a subsidiary of GGL and registered in Bermuda.

Agree, Roger, but what about Mary Holt for looks? Sailed on Mary and Elizabeth as Third Mate 1963/64. Rgds.

Was there a tie-up with PSNC/ Guinea Gulf, as I recall sailing with a couple of Engineers who had been on the Elizabeth Holt and Rose of Lancaster (Cause of Lung Cancer) as they called her.

Cheers,
Nick Jones.

Agreed, I just mentioned Rose of Lancaster as she didn't have a "Holt" name.

Brocklebank took over the management of Guinea Gulf Line around 1963 an arrangement that only lasted two years before the company was sold to Elder Dempster who as previously stated wasted no time in replacing Guinea Gulf Line's steam ships with their own motorships.
Although under Brocklebank management Guinea Gulf Line continued to operate its traditional West Africa route. Elizabeth Holt did one round trip to Calcutta sporting Brocklebank funnel colours.
I remember coasting on Brocklebank's Malakand - in late 1962- early 1963 with an ex- Guinea Gulf Line 2nd Engineer.
