Algoport

Algoma Central Marine announced that their vessel "Algoport" had broken in half and sank en route to China.
The vessel was being towed to a shipyard in China to have a new forebody built on to the after end. The after end had the accommodation, engine room and unloading gear.
Another of Algoma's ships "Algobay" was towed to China earlier and having similar work done. She is expected to start her voyage back to Canada soon.
Maybe its ironic that the Algoport sank. Were there no yards in Canada capable of doing the rebuild !!! The answer is yes but at higher costs.

I guess even with paying 25% import duty on the refit work done in China it was still cheaper than having the work done in Canada. About time our yards gave up and went away. Then we would have competitively priced government ships and other Canadian industries could benefit from the industrial regional benefits that ensue from a government contract going overseas.

hopefully no one killed or injured. Hope the chairman of the board takes notice on his loss,s next time he thinks about going abroad for repairs he could have completed at home.

Seems that everyone is doing it - CSL has numerous overseas registered companies - thank you Paul Martin. Algoma has several being built in China currently (last couple of years).
That is it - no more companies, just these two left of any consequence.
