If you Google www.rakaia.co.uk and click on the ED nouse flag you will find some interesting articles written by ED Apprentices on some aspects of their training.

Black Star Line was a member of the UK West Africa Lines (UKWAL) conference during my time associated with them in the 70's. and although my deep sea experience was with the Bank Line, I boarded the ships and dealt with the management ashore in my role as 'unit load co-ordinator'. There were some hilarious moments, and I certainly have happy memories of that period. The ships were impressive too. Happy Days!
