Jacques Chirac.

He was not perfect but I'll forgive Chirac almost everything for his stand against Bush/Blair over the invasion of Iraq...He was the leading voice against the invasion, in the UN, and his threat to veto the invasion forced the USA to withdraw it's submission to the UN to sanction the war.
Despite vilification especially from the USA/UK, his, "Iraq today does not represent an immediate threat that justifies an immediate war", speech rallied other governments to his position.

If only we'd listened.

I agree, and he was villified unmercifully by the Murdoch press in particular.
Who can forget the "Cheese eating surrender monkeys"?
Although it originated in an episode of the Simpsons, it was picked up by the UK pro war tabloids and used regularly to denigrate the French and Chirac in particular.
He rather tainted his record by later charges of corruption from when he was mayor of Paris.
