Cherry Wainer Obituary.

Regular visitors to The Playhouse in Durban, South Africa, during the 1950s/1960s will recall the vivacious Hammond Organ player in the lounge. This was Cherry Wainer and he husband the drummer backer. Her personality filled the large room and even overcame the occasional boisterous shipmates table starting out a welcome night out ashore in what used to be the only civilized seaport in the Indian Ocean barring far-off Fremantle!

I remember her with love and affection for her bouncy good humour and sheer wizardry at the organ. God bless her.

It was a thrill to see her again a year or so ago when she resurfaced on a music documentary on TV, still instantly recognisable. She mentioned - and played and sang - the old hit 'Hoots Mon'. It was the first time I'd seen her since circa 1960. R.I.P. Cherry, and thanks for all the entertainment.

Although not her, anyone today wishing to get a flavour of her playing style could do worse than download 'Red River Rock' by Johnny and the Hurricanes.

Can you remember the name of an all girl band that were playing the clubs in 1959 -1960, they were from the UK.

hello john hope your good As hugh says the most famous all girl band was the ivy benson band but sometimes she would go out with a 5 peice to play the smaller venues.they also played the holiday camps for billy butlin ,the lead trumpet player was joan hind who became a solo act for many years .she worked the american bases with us in the middle 60s

Yes that was them, even took Joan out after the show was over. This would be in 1959 at Ramstein air base. Small world.
