Breaking at Southend

Ship breaking at Southend-on-Sea in the Thames estuary was a short lived enterprise after opposition from local residents at this holiday resort. Seen at the old gas (!) jetty on the 7th August 1979 were, from left to right, the Portuguese “S Jorge” class minesweeper GRACIOSA (M417), the Dutch “Beemster” class minesweeper BLARICUM (M853) and the Italian “Aragosta” class minesweeper ****LLA (M5451).
