Smile MV Zent

Hi William,
My uncle, Ernie Ryles was a Chief Steward/Purser with Elders & Fyffes
He sailed out of Hull during the war. I think he sailed on the SS Tetela 1
as I have a photograph of myself aged about 3 dressed in a reefer jacket with a sailors cap and 'Tetela' hat band? He also brought us our first taste of banana after the war! but weren't allowed to eat it without bread -it was considered too rich for our war rationed food stomachs!
I later joined Elders and Fyffes , my first ship was the MV Zent '59 to '60 I then joined SS Tetela 11 to complete the circle perhaps?
Kind regards

Hi, I was also on the M/V Nicoya in 1957 as Chief Steward/Purser at that
time had a Passenger Gerald Durrald who later opened the Jersey Zoo.

Hi, William,
thanks for message.
Ernie Ryles lived in Liverpool and worked in the offices of Fyffes at Garston dock, remember that place? I started work there too as a draughtsman under Jimmie Parker? whilst waiting a ship! Joined the Zent in October 1959 and did three trips in her. Then joined the 'T' boats.
regards
Russ

I sailed with a Choff called Chas. D, Abbott from around Cardiff way.

He was a Choff with Elders and FFyfes.

I understand he did a trip from the Cameroons with a cargo of animals for Gerald Durrel and his zoo, as featured in his book " The Bafut Beagles "

Anybody Sail with him ?

ATB

Laurie

That book was serialised on the BBC's nightly programme "Book at Bedtime" many, many, years ago. I cannot remember who was the reader but he was masterful in its presentation and events reported and the pidgin English quotations had me in fits of laughter. One of the many masterpieces of radio that have been lost from (or were never included in) the BBC Archives.

I subsequently read the book (and others by the same author) but never got the same level of enjoyment that the radio broadcasts gave me.

Having searched, unsuccessfully, for any copies of the original recordings of the "Bafut Beagles" (there is another version, from 2010 on Amazon and elsewhere), I thought I would check out the Radio Times website to see if there was any reference there. And came up with this.

Seems that there were 10 episodes broadcast in 1960 and the reader was Richard Hurndall.
