Until the Sea Shall Free Them.
I have just finished reading "Until the Sea Shall Free Them" by Robert Frump ISBN 9781407090S11 about the sinking in 1983 of the US bulk carrier MARINE ELECTRIC with the loss of all but three of her crew.
This ship was originally built during WW2 as a T2 tanker and the above book covers not only her life but that of the decline of the US Merchant Navy from WW2 until the 1980's. In the USA the Jones Act means that all cargo's between US ports must be carried between US flag ships, the same as the old Navigation Act's in the UK. This was why the Exxon Valdez, loaded with oil from Alaska to California was a US flag ship. Not a short book but interesting to those with a shipping background Last edited by George Bis; 15th February 2019 at 04:58.. |

I got it as a Kindle book. Cost £3.99
I watched a program on US t.v. a few weeks ago showing the ship's loss and this led me to see what Kindle had on the subject. During my time at sea in the 60's and 70's we didn't meet many US ships and none of them looked young and the crews were all supposed to be on double what we got. On the other hand we were sailing on modern ships. Anyway, thank you for your interest and "happy reading" |
