Newbie

Hi all,

New to this forum, found it by researching ships I sailed on in the past.
I was a Radio Officer for 7 years with a German Company DDG Hansa from Bremen. After that another 7 years with several other shipping outfits, like Jumbo Shipping, Rotterdam, Brown and Root (offshore) and AllSeas. Became a Recording and Mastering Engineer after that untill this year. Now retired and loving every day of it.

I will post some pics later (first have to do some scanning) of the ships I sailed on and other things of interest (Radio eaquipment).

Thanks for having me here,

Henk

Welcome to SN Henk. I had an interview for an RO position with Hansa Line - forget the name of the man who conducted the interview but he was very nice, took me over the road for coffee and cake! They offered me a job but I had to wait until I'd signed off my current ship and by the time that happened they'd sold off most of the fleet! Think that was about '73.

Hi John,
thanks for your reply. I was also hired by an older guy with three other RO's, and Mueller was his name.
But everyone was "older" since I was just 19 years of age.
The four of us just had finished with Radio Holland in Rotterdam, but were told, it could take up to 6 months before we would get a job. So we set out to Bremen, and if we could not get a job there we would continue to Hamburg.
DDG Hansa hired all four of us, and within two weeks we were all on a ship.
My first Hansa ship was the "Hohenfels" and I would do two terms of 4,5 months on it with just two weeks holiday in between. Boy, did I see the world back then, with the Suez Canal still closed, sailing around the Cape Good Hope four times. Long trips, I tell you: New York to Dubai in 33 days...
BTW the Hansa closed shop in 1980, I left them just before that.

Thanks Henk, yes, I'm pretty sure that was his name. He told me he got stuck in Japan at the beginning of the war because he was on a ship and it couldn't get back to Germany. He spent the whole war there and afterwards became an interpreter for the Americans because he'd learned Japanese. Hansa seemed like a pretty good company, I was sorry I never got to sail with them.
Enjoy the site.

The DDG Hansa named almost all their ships after "felsen" i.e. "burchten" (= castles) in Germany. Are you refering to Hohenfels in Bavaria? It's a little town with a ruin named Hohenfels and is close to a US military base. Been their once, the castle is kind of a disapointment.

The other ships I was an RO on with the Hansa were: Kybfels, Frauenfels, Frankenfels, Trifels and Freudenfels.

I posted two pictures in the Gallery section, but wanted to post more than one at the time. How does one do that?
