There must be SN members who have fond (or not so fond) memories of their times sailing under the "Diamond D." Let's hear them!

From memory, the following is a list of Denholm owned and managed ships from the late 60s to early 80s. There are probably mistakes, but it's a start. I know that there were 90 to 100 ships in the company at that time and I would love to hear of any additions to the list. I've named 85 ships and those I sailed on are highlighted in blue.

Additions to the original post are shown in red:

I've got fond memories of the Industria. I don't think she was with Denholms for long, but I really enjoyed my time on her. Industria was, in fact, the only general cargo ship I ever sailed on. Most of my time was spent on OBO's and, later, tankers. I'd love to get a photo of Industria. Has anyone got one?

According to the company book "The Diamond D" 2016 the company between 1998 and 2000 managed 23 tankers and bulkers of the Georgian Shipping Co, which proved a financially troublesome contract and much litigation about unpaid fees etc.

Does anyone know the names of the vessels involved. I am unsure if any are included in the numerous blocks of names posted earlier in the forum.

#841 ·
Georgi was one I visited with alternator failure. Certainly they came to DSM in an 'underfinanced' state (for instance when proving to surveyor that she could support the sea load on each of the two generators remaining we almost became unstuck as one would only start if barred round to one spot due lack of spare starting air valves).

I think the management was lost to Hanseatic(?) because of some ownership linkage and were not long with DSM.

Aside GEORGI ( details below) I have identified the following as controlled by Georgian Shipping Co in the period 1998 - 2000 and now need to identify which were under Denholm Management to make the 23 vessels as stated in the 2016 book then add the details to the name

Some of those I recognise but without being able to be definitive that might not be helpful (I was camping out at the IoM office away from the proper hurlyburly). One that surprises me is Luctor I had in mind that she was a Transpetrol vessel (and may have a file on her).

#849 · (Edited)
I have now narrowed it down to twenty four vessels through process of elimination of those not registered in Malta as stated in the book, so one more to be decided upon.

Yes agreed, I have since my last post, collated her details which places her later albeit briefly, with Georgian Shg

Hi all,
Would like to know if anyone remembers my Dad, Alan Common. He was Chief Engineer and worked for Denholms throughout the 70's and early 80's.

One of the ships on which he was chief was the Severn Bridge. My mother, brother and sisters were on board for a trip round the world in 1973-74 on this ship and we all have fantastic memories still. One name I do remember was the Captain, Willie MacRae from Aberdeen.

If any bells have been rung that would be fantastic

Sailed with your Dad on Loch Maree. We both stood by as a new build at Scotstoun in December 1975. The Captain was Davy Dickson, 2nd Engineer Willie Woods, Electrician Donald Campbell. Subsequent to maiden voyage, we sailed together, as he was permanent Chief onboard. Great personality, enjoyed a beer (or two) with him. There may be some info and photos of your Dad in some old 'Denholm News', I'll dig them out from the loft after the holidays, and add to this post.

Hi, my father is Captain John Rhodes who was with Denholms, retired from sailing in 1976 and became a Superintendent with Denholms until around 1986 or 1987. Sadly he died last year aged 90.

He was good friends with Captain Willie McAllister (who died some time ago I think), Captain Lamont Ross (living in Perthshire) and Ian Anderson (living in Fife, I think he was First Engineer?).

Can't add too much about the names of the ships he sailed on I'm afraid, he and my mother used to rattle off ship's names they had sailed on together after they married, Burmah Pearl rings a bell, other than that I can't remember any other although there were several.

Have seen his name mentioned on a couple of Denholms threads, so there are a few folk out there who remember sailing with him.

http://www.historicalrfa.org/requis...-requisitioned-auxiliaries-british-confidence also mentions a fatal accident which saw two of his friends killed off the coast of Australia in 1947.

I am sorry to hear that (I cannot see it has been reported elsewhere and my memory is a sieve). I met John for the first time in the office and enjoyed his company. As for you, Alan, I do remember having dinner with your family when one of you brats had chicken pox. A week later I was off sick with shingles!

#863 ·
Thanks Gents.

Varley - there were four of us kids so the odds are 3-1 against me being responsible for your shingles!

Tom S - yes, he and our mother retired to Perth around 1987 (he then worked part time as a safety officer in a Dundee college for a while). He lived there until early last year when he moved into a nursing home in Linwood for his last few months. He and our mother (who died in 2011) lived in Crieff when they got married in 1960 until he left sailing and we moved to Glasgow in 1976.

I have a few pictures of him on board an iron ore ship at Bone in Algeria in the mid fifties, with pictures of a few others (M. Mullen, W. Price and G. Grierson) - not sure if it's a Denholm ship but I will post them when I get a chance.

#864 ·
Sorry to hear of your fathers passing. I sailed with him as 3rd mate (just after gaining my 2nd mates ticket) on the Naess Sovereign in 1967. I was on the ship for a year and three days and Capt Rhodes was one of the masters. Your father wore a Rolex GMT Master watch, which really impressed me! As I had my 21st birthday onboard I decided to treat myself and your father arranged for the agent in Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia , to purchase one for me from a duty free shop. If I remember rightly it cast £82, that was almost 52 years ago and I'm still wearing it 24/7, I think I got my money's worth. Your was a very pleasant person, he was helpful and encouraging to a young deck officer and I always had fond memories of him, I'm sure are proud of him.

Hi Bill,
I was told at the time and don't know if this was just an urban myth that at the time it was built it was the largest tanker in the World, 1960. It was my first ship and I still remember going through Gatwick airport and saw a big advert for Denholms saying they managed 1% of the total World shipping tonnage. Also don't know if that was true it probably was.

By the way where did you find the info on the spec ,owners etc.

A few more to add to the list of Denholm ships.
Nordic Faith (Sold to the Italians Feb 1981) The food was pretty poor. We came into Brindisi Italy and the crew paid off and we got an Italian crew, the food became brilliant for all of one day, The next day all the officers paid of and flew home.

Hi Bill,
Only joined this forum a few years ago and never really looked into some of the threads but I would be interested in your book I was only with Denholm's for 10 years having served an apprenticeship ashore after Denholm's I went on to Northern Marine for a few years then BP another couple of years then offshore to drilling rigs in 1989 worked on all types for drilling rigs semis, jack-ups, swamp barges, tenders, and drill ships I retired from the industry 2015 and loved every minute of it even the crap tankers (Dalma was one, still have nightmares about the Dalma :) ) Pity the downswing in drilling happened and few years ago and covid or I would still be working maybe.

PS are you putting photos of the ships in your book I think I have a few photos I could give you.
