Hello

Hi,

Juts joined, not a sailor but just bought a Ships Telegraph at a jumble sale. Would love to find out more about it...
Think its Military as it has make and stop smoke signals.
Where in the forum should I go and how can I upload and image

Hi there John, welcome to the forum.
Many ships telegraphs were manufacured by Chadburn Telegraphs and looking them up on the net should provide a lot of information
Your device is no doubt from a Royal Naval vessel with its sectors relating to "make smoke" and "stop smoke" , orders from the bridge to the engine and boiler rooms for that crew to change the fuel and air ratios to the boilers and create smoke or cease in order to obscure the clear vision of the likes of an enemy submarine to a target.

Thanks Bob,

I had a look at images of Chadburn Telegraphs but not seen anything similar. This is a horizontal unit. See pics..

I think igot the right 'rag' but maybe the wrong titlle fo the merchant navy and airline pilots union paper??
Memories are dangerous, i go back to the 60,s when if one did not have a company pension scheme one was encouraged to join the [ mnopf]??

Thanks Bob, gets more interesting. The name on the faceplate says "The McNab"
The guy I bought it from did mention that he was told it came off a Dunkirk ship but said he could not stand by that. I know that sounds like a sales line but he was very genuine. Even told me to take it and pay him later as he thought he could trust me. Not had that experience in a long time.

There is a lot about telegraphs on the net , maybe you will strike it lucky with a similar unit
Brings to mind a pub I have been to that had a Chadburn in the bar. Where I cannot remember nor whether they rang finish with engines or abandon ship at closing time, mind you,

Bob
