A carear in the RFA

Hi
im 16 andcurrently doing my GCSE's exams and leaving school next month and have always wanted to go to sea, with the merchant navy or RFA, does anybody know how hard it is to be accepted to become a cadet i looked at what you need and i should be able to get that, but i am just wondering if its realy hard to be accepted to become a cadet.

Try this link for a broad overview, Richie:

http://www.careersatsea.org/

This one is a bit more specific:

http://www.sstg.org/career_sea.php

It tells you what qualifications you need etc.

Best of luck - it is/was a great career for most of us on this website

Hi! Richie. Look at the RFA website, there is/was an application form to fill in & send. What do you want to be Deck or Engine room? All the best, Pat

BTW. RFA pay almost double cadets pay than sstg!!

Take a look at the Marine Society website http://www.ms-sc.org/

They have currently have RFA Wave Ruler as a "webship" - giving out frequent newsletters. I'm not sure if you can contact the people on board or not, but there is lots of other information on the site.

Good luck.

Kev,
Didn't realise you were with Campbells. Mike Dusher and Kev Booth still with them? Both Shields lads, should be 2nd Mates by now.

Hi Richie,
I'm wanting to do the same sort of career as you. I've applied to Ship Safe too - out of all the companies that I applied to they definitely have been the most friendly and quickest to reply to any messages or applications. They're just an agency who take you on first, you can then select the shipping company that you want to work for.
At the moment I'm just waiting to hear back from a company that I've applied to through them.

Regards
Daniel

Hi...entry to the RFA is becoming harder but I would advise joining a company as a cadet and not an agency, you wont know which ship you'll end-up on. I'm with the RFA and just about to start my Deck Officer training if I can help let me know.

Hi Derick, I spent 14 years with Rfa and I never knew what ship I was going on.....I asked for a small ship around the uk coast....I got the Fort Vic in Freemantle Australia! Andy
