British Heritage.

The attack in the Gulf would never have happened in the days of BPTC by a bunch of crazy ayatollahs.With a crew fully charged up with cheese beanos,Brown Windsor soup and 4Bells rum.,there would have been no contest.

Not so sure ! The British Renown was attacked by the Iranians during the Iran\Iraq war. Only problem was the Renown was charted by the Iranians and had their Oil onboard !

Can anybody supply a breakdown of the ships crew and what nationalities?

If the Iranians said they weren't their boats, our government should have taken them at their word, and sunk them as pirates.
I, like many others no doubt had thought what sitting targets us huge slow moving targets could be while passing through the Quoins.
My most fearful moment while passing through was during a monsoon downpour. Couldn't see the main deck from the bridge wing.
No thoughts of gunboats in those days though, as the Shah still ran the place.

A very pertinent question, Today, what constitutes a British Ship? Admiral Google tells me the British Heritage is registered in the Isle of Man (Crooked Mona) and owned by, wait for it, Hai Kuo Sg 1502 Ltd.
God knows how many of the crew are Britain's Hardy Sons, but my guess is very few.

If shipping companies want the protection of the taxpayers Royal Navy let them Flag-In, less buggering about with FOC's and Tonnage Tax.

Just see what can be found if you scrape the surface, Flag of convenience! MOD should charge them for Time and bunkers/

Thank heaven for double hulls. Not the reason they were introduced, Thanks Exxon Valdez, but they seem to help damage limitation. The one that was set on fire would have been a lot worse without a double hull methinks.

The UK has a responsibility for defence to the Isle of Man even though it is not strictly part of the UK. The fact that we had a warship there probably saved the day and is commendable. No idea of crew nationalities but British ships have had foreign crews for years so don't see an issue. My only experience of crew nationalities being an issue was when time chartered by NATO where non NATO country crew members had to leave, there was only one affected, The Sparks who was Irish.

Best example of this was the Limburg. Explosives penetrated both hulls causing explosion,major fire and pollution but almost certainly the DH saved the vessel.

foreign crews got me thinking back to my time early sixties, don't think i ever sailed on a ship that did not have foreign members, Dutch Pole German Maltese etc, in fact i was on a South American ship The St Merriel, where the whole of the deck crew apart from myself and the deck boy were foreign

I sailed on a boat registered in the I.O.M. and flew the Red Ensign.
There was not a single crew member who was British.

I sailed in a Bluey in 1962 and apart from the bosun I was the only Englishman on deck. The rest were all foreign, ( Gogs, all from Amlwlch)
