Father 40's and 50's -HMS Fisgard. HMS Caledonia, Artificer Apprentice

Hello to all, I have just joined site. I have been researching my father over the weeks and have had fantastic responses, particular from one gentleman now retired from the Navy. Enquiries are also to be put in Fisguardian.

Are these names and dates familiar to anyone out there?

My father Ronald Frederick May died in Malta on 15 8 53, born 12 July 1924 (Engine Room Artificer 2nd class). D/MX 70546.

I now think he attended initial training at Fisgard (early 40's) then sent to Calendonia at Rosyth.

I am interested to hear from anyone who served on his ship HMS Cumberland in the early 50's. Young Stokers for instance? I would attach some photo's of him in uniform but cannot get 'manage attachments' to work.

Kind Regards - Kathy (his youngest daughter)

Hello to you too. I have now figured out how to download photo's onto the site. I have put two of my father in uniform. I have not figured out yet how to view them myself. I am sure I will.

Thank you for your message. Once I have recorded all the facts I am finding out, I will put the information on the web. Can it go on this site do you think?

Kind regards - Kathy

From Michigan, a warm welcome to Ships Nostalgia.
The information on your father would be most welcome on our site, Kathy.
We'll be looking forward to your postings.

Due to pop up blockers, I can't attach photo's. Any suggestions? Would I be able to email photo's to you?

I had a similar problem on the World Navy Ship Forum.

You can allow any site to show pop-ups individually if you want or you can post the pictures in the gallery.

Welcome onboard, Kathy.

You are correct that your father would have spent about fifteen months at FISGARD and the rest of his four year's apprenticeship at CALEDONIA.

As his daughter, you can apply to the MOD (Navy) for a copy of your father's Service Certificate, which will give you all his service details.

In case you don't already know, there is an HMS CUMBERLAND Association and the website is at http://web.ukonline.co.uk/cumberland15/

If you enquire there, someone will almost certainly be able to help you.

My other addiction is family history, so if I can be of any help don't hesitate to get back to me. You can reach individuals through this website's private message system.

Best wishes

Dear Alick

Thank you for your message, I am in touch with the Chairman of the magazine HMS Cumberland. A small article is to appear shortly. I will endeavour to post photo's of my father on your site and Ships Naustalgia. Kind Regards - Kathy

ps I may well be in touch with you again due to your interest in family research. Excuse spelling mistakes, spell check is not down loading.

I have just found the HMS FISGARD Association website at http://www.fisgardassociation.org/ You could email them and find out which class your father was in. The artificer apprentices joined January, April and September each year and each entry was given a class number.

Then, if you look at http://www.fisgardassociation.org/clasphot.htm you can probably find his photo.

Best wishes

Dear Allick

Thank you - I think I have to become a member. I am looking at the site again today. I will telephone the organisation on Tuesday to explain my circumstances ie I am a relative not an ex Royal Engineer.

Thank you for your time and interest.

Kathy
