In today's age there is probably no need for the seaman to gain or amass skills or knowledge beyond what is required of their basic but essential duties.

The complexity of shipping in a bygone age required particular skills pertinent to the type of vessel and its machinery, gear etc. To-day these monstrosity box ships, ore wagons and VLCCs are all geared up for minimal human input to gain maximum profit for the owners. One could blame technology for this state of affairs but hey ho that's progress in another world.
