I remember all the hullabaloo at the time. Strange how Christine and Mandy got tarred with the brush of infamy while some of the corrupt and grubby politicians who were the real villains of the day moved on to some form of elder statesmen respect.

RIP

At the time, I thought Miss Keeler the better looking of the two.
Certainly had an interesting early life.

Yes, but created a bit of mayhem for them in the process.
Poor Christine; M R-D had a better, if shorter, run.

Well, Italian family, so . . . .

Seemed to have a penchant for attractive ladies with career-limiting connections:

Gisela Winegard, a German-born fashion and photographer’s model, met Profumo in Oxford in 1936 when he was an undergraduate and kept in contact with him for at least 20 years during which time she ran a Nazi secret information service in occupied Paris, had a child with a high-ranking German officer, and was imprisoned for espionage on the liberation of Paris in 1944.

At the height of the Profumo Affair in 1963, MI6 sent a letter and files to MI5 investigations head Arthur Martin about Profumo’s contacts with Winegard, maiden name Klein, and outlining her exploits.

The MI6 officer, Cyril Mackay, wrote: "Although it is not particularly relevant to the current notorious case, Geoffrey thought you might like to have for your files the attached copy of a report from our representative [redacted], dated 2nd October 1950, which makes mention of an association between Gisela Klein and Profumo which began ca 1933 and had apparently not ceased at the time of this report."

From The Telegraph link ".................... when it was discovered she had worked for the Germans during the war and was “100 per cent pro-German”.

Well, we can't have that, can we! Imagine, a German working for the Germans during the war and worst of all, being "100 per cent German." The US intelligence services must have really been on the ball, digging that up.

Profumo, at least, had some Dago genes, as an excuse for his horny behaviour.

Hope she didn't die from one of those umbrellas dipped in Bulgarian orange juice.

Apart from being pro-German, she was pro-Fumo and probably smoked as well.

RIP Christine.

You drove me to look it up in the 'always totally accurate' Wiki

While giving evidence at the trial of Stephen Ward, charged with living off the immoral earnings of Keeler and Rice-Davies, the latter made a famous riposte. When James Burge, the defence counsel, pointed out that Lord Astor denied an affair or having even met her, she replied, "Well (giggle) he would, wouldn’t he?" (often misquoted "Well he would say that, wouldn't he?"). By 1979, this phrase had entered the third edition of the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, and is occasionally abbreviated as MRDA ("Mandy Rice-Davies applies").
I always thought it was the misquoted comment which was accurate however, if only that was the most that history was ever bent . . . .

I just read an article where Keeler said she had nothing to do with either of her kids. Did she have money? Just saying like.

Far from it. According to her obituary in The Times, her life was far too colourful for its details to be kept under wraps. She worked variously in telephone sales in Fulham and for a dry cleaning business in Battersea. Changing her name she was also a school dinner-lady for a while, but was dismissed when her identity became known. For most of her life since the 1960s she had lived alone. It is also reported that, as for her liaisons with Profumo, she had little memory of it in the end, saying "I don't remember the sex with Jack that much, other than it was furtive at first...... It seems incredible, looking back, it could have resulted in so much tragedy and damage. All that Swinging Sixties stuff. It didn't do anyone any good, did it?"

Died of smoker's lungs the Norwegian papers reports. The one to blame for that slightly banal end must be herself. Cough, cough.

Don't think she was well off, JT, and I suppose we're bound to hear varying reports of her relationships:

Cause of death given as COPD.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the general name of various diseases and conditions affecting the lungs, normally more than one present.
COPD describes more the symptoms rather than any particular cause.

A person who has never smoked can suffer from COPD - but rare and probably not applicable in this case.

The closing words of her obituary -"All that Swinging Sixties stuff. It didn't do anybody any good, did it?" - expose a conundrum which is only too recognisable.

On the one hand is the libertarian release which began with the verdict of the jury in the Lady Chatterly trial - rather like the letting go of a very large anchor with a thunderous roar, throwing up clouds of rust and detritus from a cable of unlimited length, all at a precisely timed and logged moment in late 1960. On the other hand is the exposure which followed of corruption and the abuse of power in high places. Both things, in their own way, were to be welcomed. What did not happen at all, however, and what, with hindsight might have been a real benefit from both of those things, was any cleansing of the Augean stables. It simply didn't happen.

It is ironic that it should be CK, of all people, who might have pointed this out. In 1963, at the time of the publication of the Denning report into the antics of Profumo, CK and others, my girl-friend (later to become my first wife) taught me that that there is good in the worst of us and bad in the best of us.

RIP, Christine.
