Hello Mike,

My Dad, William (Bill) Turner was 3rd engineer on the crew list 16/12/68 on the City of Eastbourne, engaging at Karachi on 26/09/68, and discharged on 1/3/69 also at Karachi. Any ideas how he would have got to Karachi to join the ship?
Thanks,
Pam

Hi Mike and Pam:

I was Third Officer on that trip. We joined the ship in Karachi having flown from Heathrow. It was an officer/engineer crew change with those relieved flying home shortly after. I recall spending a night in a hotel before joining the ship. The crew change took about two hours and we sailed for Bombay shortly after. Our Indian crew were exchanged with a MANZ crew in Saint John, NB.

Rex Broadbent's wife was also on board for part of the trip.

Hi Pam:

If you go to my gallery there is a picture of the City of Eastbourne which I took while on the voyage you mentioned. We were off the coast of South Africa and heading for Halifax when engine problems diverted us to East London for repairs.

So pleased to hear from you Nova Scotian.
I'm trying to find out all I can about my Dad's working life, he passed away in March '83. He said very little about where he sailed to whilst we were growing up, and probably like you, he was away a great deal. So I am delighted to hear something about that particular trip on the City of Eastbourne.
I know I'm asking you questions about a trip that took place 49 years ago, but was there much shore leave on that trip, particularly as you had to put in to East London for engine repairs?
When you say the ship was en route to Halifax, is Halifax in Nova Scotia?
St John's NB, is that New Brunswick?
A MANZ crew??, Australian, New Zealand crew?
Do you remember my Dad, or did engineers stick with engineers, navigation officers with navigation officers?
What cargoes was the ship moving?

Thank you so much for making contact. May I download your photo of the Eastbourne in South Africa?

On City of Birkenhead (MANZ Run) we used to change crews, both European and Asian in Canadian ports. The Europeans flew to/from UK and the Asian swapped with a City ship on the Indian run. There were normally no Australian or NZ crew on board.
