I have often wondered how many barrels to the whale. There is a web site that records the arrivals and departures for Sydney NSW in OZ in the 1840's and records some of the old baques returning from the southern fisheries with, in some cases of a 1000 barrels on board. These vessels had been at sea for many months. Also I have read about the whale fisheries north of England from the 1700's onwards and the vessels returned home with many huindreds of barrels on board. The crews shared the price of approx 40 shillings per barrel which kept many of the small English seaside villages alive.
