Blue Star ship entering Barry

I trying to get information on a Blue Star ship that had an altercation with the pier head in Barry South Wales whilst entering the port sometime in the 70s ?

Yes I witnessed a Blue Star vessel entering the lock in Barry possibly 1973/74 that hit the the pier entrance. I cannot recall her name but remember boatmen etc running along the pier with planks behind them being tossed into the air like matchsticks, no one was hurt as far as I was aware. It certainly looked funny to me but the guys running certainly did not think so.
I think the vessel was lightship possibly due to go into the dry dock, not sure what extent the damage was to the pier as I only seen the deck planking going skywards there must have been quite a lot of damage underneath.

Lock gates collision

Well, this brings back memories. I was the 5th engineer on board the Halifax as we arrived at Barry on a sunny Sunday afternoon in June 1978. I can't recall the exact date but as I paid off at Barry on 26th June and we'd sailed from Dover after the 15th June it's between those dates.
I was in the engine room, closed up as we entered the outer harbour. We were going dead slow ahead, when suddenly the telegraph requested a mixture of half ahead, half astern, full ahead etc. I was sent up to see what was happening. I could see the stern swinging round towards some yachts, and the angle to get into the locks was about 45 degrees, when it should have been dead straight. People were jumping off the yachts into the water, as it looked like our stern was going to hit them. I went back down below as the telegraph was signalling full ahead, and told the other engineers to 'hold on tight'. We then hit the lock gates/wall with a thump. No one on board was injured. When the surveyor arrived in the next day or so, as I was the only engineer that could 'readily' start the lifeboat engine, I escorted the surveyor on the lifeboat to look at the bow. It was damaged as seen in the pic here, and was full of twigs and bits of the lock. All the surveyor said to me was 'dry dock job'.
Years later I met a Barry marine pilot who explained the nasty cross currents you can get there, and he explained that once half the ship was in the harbour, the stern would have been caught by the fast tides outside.
