Welcome aboard Bobby. Only did the one trip on the Cairngowan, as relieving 'Sparks' in November/December 1964. Was standing by a newbuilding tanker in Vickers' Walker Naval Yard and asked to do the one trip as the regular sparks had gone sick. Was promised by Marconi's that Cairngowan would be home for Christmas. She was, we paid off in Newcastle at midday on Christmas Eve!

Nice ship, good crowd but a lousy run to be on at that time of year (unless you lived in Newcastle or Grangemouth).

Good luck on the site, I'm sure that you will catch up with some former shipmates here.

Ron

Hi Wee Bobby, old Cairn Boat man myself but before 61. The old " Esk " and the old " Dhu " Many hair raising runs across the Western in the winter.
Good book on Cairn Line by Gilbert Wallace. ISBN No. 0-9550078-0-1 from your library.
Have fun.

No, Tony, she was chartered to Manchester Liners earlier in 1965 and renamed Manchester Engineer. The following year she reverted to Cairn Line and her original name. Both companies were part of Furness Withy.
