Exclamation North Star Ships

Hello everybody

I'm writing to find out if their is anybody out their that has old photo's of the North Star ships from the 1980's to present.

Reason is I'm involved in a project about the North Star Fishing/Shipping Company and it's history.

I would be very appreciated if you could help

I have photo's of the recent fleet but require photo's of the older vessels that do not exsist f.ex the trawlers grampian Fame,Freedom Viking , Princess etc.

I worked with Craig Group from the early 80s till I came ashore
January 2000 employed as a Mate & Skipper, so if you have any

Hi Stuart,
I have several photo's both in port and on station of the Grampian standby boats. My Father was mate on the Crusader for a few years. PM me your Email address and i'll send you what I have.

I've added 5 photo's in the Specialist ships gallery of the Grampian boats I have in the PC I think I have more but they will have to be scanned. I'll post here if I find any more.

If they're to be used online , publication then all I ask is my name besdie the photo and credited for copyright.

I don't know if if you'r still doing the North Star project but if its of any interest to you I have photos of the Grampian Star x Boston Nimrod x Glenfinnan also the Grampian Rose x Norwegian Purse Seiner /whaler and the Grampian Hunter x Fleetwood Trawler Zonia x Artic Brigand. I also have a list of 33 ships North Star owned or operated around the mid eighties, 27 of them old trawlers.I sailed in 19 of them I have thier fishing names as well as thier Stand By names
I have also video footage of the Grampian Crusader on a trip West of Ireland but I dont suppose you would be interested in that.

Ex Grampian Dee

Hi to all

To anybody intrested in ex North Star Vessels

I have found an internet site which sells ships of all sizes

and one of the ships I have found is the ex Grampian Dee

I thought that this was broken up along with the sister Grampian City.

The Dee was the last of the Stern Trawlers to be sold 18 months ago. Wood and Chieftain were sold to Danish Interests.

Warrior was sold and reconverted to Tuna fishing and City was the only one sold to scrap

I was on the Grampian Queen years ago. She was an ex sidewinder with none of todays luxuries. Awful job, did one trip and that was enough. Cheers janathull

Grampian Queen long gone but brings back memories

She was one of the vessels to help with the Piper Alpha disaster 1988 along with the Silver Pit and Sand Haven now Grampian Venture.

I'm off to Malta on Monday to rebuild the main engine on the Dee, now owned by FenderCare Marine and, I think, renamed "Fendercare Independence". I'll confirm once I get there.

Well, I'm there and while I can't go into too much detail on a public forum, let's just say that the newness has just about worn off the main engine.

JKB, hoping the local bloke really can grind crankpins in situ...

I have a painting of an old steam Trawler Grampian Prince which has been painted on a wooden board. Painting is 18" x 12" and I would imagine it was painted by a crew member. Someone might be interested to see this painting.

The "Fendercare Independence" ex"Grampian Dee" is now back in the UK and operating out of Lowestoft. It had quite a bit of main engine trouble on its way back but I haven't heard of any issues since it went into service. It generally ties up close to Smalls drydock just inside the bridge.

Hello folks.
I was on the Maersk Puncher in Brazil in the 80's and believe she is now in the North Star fleet. Does anyone know her new name?
I also worked for Al-Mojil in Saudi in the 90's and believe some of their vessels are/were in the NS fleet also. Does anybody have any details.

Hi

Maersk Puncher was sold to NS in 1991 she was then named Grampian Freedom but in 1996 she was renamed Grampian Supporter as she was given a contract to support offshore acctivities in Morcambe Bay.

The Grampian Supporter has since been sold to foriegn owners as Native Pride in 2006.

The Maersk Pacer sister to Puncher was also purchased from NS and named Grampian Fame in 1992 she as since been sold to Greek owners and named Ageis in 2007.

These vessels were sold for brand new build Standby vessels

LTS , I worked down in Brazil and remember well the M. Puncher. We worked on the Star Hercules and often gave 'unofficial' guidance to the european Anchor Handlers by acting as a static radar observation post. The knowledge on our vessel of the seabed in campos was legendary and was collated in a series of hand drawn maps and books of Data (Before the days of good GPS !) The Astro Curimar was the official Brazilian boat but was totally useless! The Master on our vessel was also a well known Anchor man ,Capt. John Carlton who simply could not resist having fun !

Yep it was brilliant ! On the Hercules we had a vanished brick on a nice wood plinth. this 'Award' was presented every time we came back on board to the best 'performer' from the previous trips payoff. The origins of the brick was the fact that it was from the old 'Bar Macomo' just outside the gates at Macae , a pleasant little watering hole and one in which some local once took a pot shot across the crowded bar with a pistol one night when we were quietly supping our lemonade. Payoff involved going to the Hotel gloria in Rio and joining involved a stop at the Panorama in Macae.
We very often joined by helicopter, these were old Vietam Hugheis and in the 3 years I worked there we had the unpleasant job of picking up the pieces off the seabed of various well kept secret crashes of these things.
I wish I had had a camera with regard to Brazillian Anchor Handling ! This was always entertaining and the boats that always ended up doing the work properly was the Mearsk Boats, No mean task in those depths with that level of equipment. I have a great respect for the Brazilians. They were what is now called 'being on a steep learning curve' yet what they lacked in experience they made up for by inventiveness and a willingness to put young people on the front line. This payed off big time and today they have a lot of skilled people.
I was last down in brazil in 2008 in Arrial do Cabo laying pipes and a lot had changed.

The Panorama and the Colonial. Stayed there many times.
I havn't been back since the 80's and the wife probabally wouldn't allow me back anyway.
But happy days back then.

i only happened upon this site a few days ago,and was fascinated by the interest in MDHC cranes.I had occasion to be in the dock complex on 10/11/2011 and witnessed the Mammoth lifting and moving new steelwork which is bound for the Pier head extension,and did take a few piccys on my skippers camera,which i will post here as soon as they have been e-mailed to me.
