Question Tankships terms

Hi All,

Hereís one for you learned gentlemen of the sea, especially any tankships chaps.

Just so that I know for an article that Iím writing, in the realm of oil tankers, what is meant by the terms:
Laycan performance?
And on a tankship
What is the Slop System?

John,

I've just spotted your post but, having been up all night, I've opted for the lazy way out and will point you towards your answers from elsewhere on the web.


According to the Maritime Dictionary, Laycan is: "a ship chartering term which stands for laydays commencement and cancelling; specifies the earliest date on which laytime can commence and the latest date, after which the charterer can opt to cancel the charterparty". From here.


Slop tanks are covered in this article.

Hope that helps until some of our Chartering and Tanker experts come on line later in the day!
