Smile Survivors of SS Arletta

Hello there I am new to this and this is my first computer.

My father was one of the 5 survivors of The SS Arletta which was torpedoed off Cape Race on the 5th August 1942. I would very much like to know if there are any survivors left or their relatives that I could contact. My father's name was Stanley Powell and he died in March 1993. Oh yes my name is David Powell and I live in Harlow Essex. Hope someone out there will be able to respond to this.

Thank you

Ravicat, a warm welcome to Ships Nostalgia, it's good to have you onboard.
I'm hoping some of our members have information that would help you find still living survivors of the sinking.

Welcome aboard from East Yorkshire, David.
I see you've had some help from the crew already and expect you'll get some more.
Find your way around the ship and enjoy the voyage.

David, the name Arletta jumped out at me as my late father was on it in 1940-41. Fortunately not when she met her end as he paid off in August 1941, a year previously. He used to tell many stories of her when she traded avgas from the Thames to the Tyne, including lost in fog, an e-boat skirmish and having a UXB on board after an air raid on the Tyne. mnaged to find a picture of her under her former name of Vanduara. Good luck in your quest.

Hello David and welcome,

Along with your father the only other name I can find is the Second Officer William H Duncan. It is easier to find the names of the casualties rather than the survivors.

The last crew listing for ARLETTA official number 148856 should be held at the National Archives in piece BT 381/1974 This should list all onboard and if you cross reference with that file and this list of casualties below then you should come up with the names of the other three survivors. If you require this file and need help then make another post.

Incidently one of the casualties was John Watson - he was only 14.

Hi David,
I'm sorry I can't help with your question but I thought I'd mention that the young John Watson(14) and his brother Francis(21) were my grandmother's cousins. also J Duckenfield was the father of my father's best pall. Did you find any info on the survivors? I also have Duncan 2nd cousins on that same side of the family and it is possible they are related to the survivor. They all live in the Stenhousemuir / Larbert / Falkirk area near the port of Grangemouth
Regards,
Tom

hello I am the great grandson of Henry Baker.Who was lost at sea on SS ARLETTA
I am searching my family history. Most of my family comes from the north east of England and were attached to merchant shipping. My grandfather William Baker who lived in Whitby was a chief engineer in the merchant navy but has now passed away. I will keep you posted of more of my findings on my great grand father

kind regards G baker
