Help required

Hi Folks from the Outer Hebrides of Scotland

Thank you for allowing me to join!

My father was at sea from 1951 - 1961 and it was a major part of his life and something he talks about often. He turns 86 at the end of this month and suffers from COPD. I want to do something for his birthday.

I have his discharge book and have found 23 / 24 boats he was on - there is one that I can find no information or pictures on and wondered if anyone could help please! The ship name in 1951 was ALHAMA (Off No 180673; NRT 1295; NHP 180) can anyone point me in the right direction? Any help greatly appreciated.

I am also wondering how to access crew lists....?

Thanks in advance anyone able to help

Kind regards
Rhoda Trusswell

Hello Rhoda and welcome,

Try searching for her under the name "EMPIRE TAFF".

EMPIRE TAFF was a 2,296 GRT cargo ship which was built by AG Weser, Bremen. Completed in 1927 as Apollo for Neptun Line, Bremen. Seized in May 1945 as a war prize at Flensburg. To MoWT and renamed EMPIRE TAFF. Sold in 1947 to John Bruce & Co, Glasgow and renamed ALHAMA. Scrapped in 1953 at Faslane, Argyllshire.

Regards
Hugh

Rhoda........ for ships papers etc you should email this address asking if they hold the papers (logs and crew lists)of a certain ship quoting the dates you want and the ships name and official No they will then check if they hold them and then you pay for a researcher to get what you want it costs around $50 Canadian and they send them by post..... [email protected] if you have the dates etc the better so good luck they have helped me several times over the years ....If I can help PM me

Thank you so much for your help - that was the final piece in the jigsaw so to speak and thanks also for the info on where to get crew lists etc. Found this project really interesting - I wish my father would embrace the internet as he would love researching.

Kind regards
Rhoda

ALHAMA and CAPE NELSON

The website www.shipsoftheclyde.com has a number of entries for ALHAMA loading at Glasgow for the Mediterranean and CAPE NELSON loading for Japan, all for the years you mention. You don't need to register to use the site, just visit it and use it.
