Welcome to the site loads of info to be found here. I sailed on the Selectivity myself, June 6th-september 9th 1964. first trip to sea. Captains name was brown. What an introduction to the merchant navy.

You will certainly spark many happy memories when you have a chance to explore our threads and, who knows, you may even re-establish contact with old shipmates.
Good luck!

Your surname brought back memories, but as your Dad worked for BP and I did not then it is not the same man, but thanks for your answer and welcome to this very addictive site.

Hi there

I've just joined this forum because of this thread.

When I left school at Easter 1962 I was lucky to get my first job with Everards and started 2 weeks later.

Now I expect you are thinking that I am going to wax lyrical about my voyages around Cape Swanscombe and such like, but NO, I was a land lubber. You see I worked in the various offices there at Greenhithe, starting off with the reg office at The Wharf.

So I hope you don't mind my memories from the other perspective so to speak, I'll just posts it in small blocks because my eyes don't like working too hard atm, bloody cataracts.

I remember the first day at the office I worked upstairs with Alan Golding and others and straight away was given a very responsible job, checking the ready reckoner pages with the adding machine. Well I was a bit green to these things and didn't want to get it wrong on the first day. :-)

I started working checking and recording the victualling and other bills from the various ports visited by the ships and then passing them for payment.

The office looked out over the yard and wharf with I think it was the sail makers loft opposite. At that time the yard always seemed to have something going on. Downstairs as you entered the front door, in a small room to the right, sat the telephone operator and switchboard, which was one of those old type with the vertical board with a number of holes connected to other holes with the cables criss crossing like a drunken sailor's legs. And in control of this beast, usually was a man called Fred. He had I think suffered from polio as a child and ended up in a wheel chair. To see him answer a call for a line though, well he was fast, even faster when pulling the plug out of the board when the call finished, and then just letting it crash back down into it's holder.

Behind that room was the general post room with a smaller office for the manager who I think was called Mr. Matthews.

Also on the ground floor was the Board Room with the usual family portraits and big table. This was often where Miss Ethel would be found working, and I will say that I was always treated well by all management really. It was quite a common thing for her to come upstairs to the office I worked in and ask me to get some of the ships journals and ledgers for her and bring them down to her in the board room, in her words, 'if your not busy' or 'when you have time'.

Just to finish for now, my wage? well it was 4 a week to start with and that was below the tax threshold so I only had to pay NI stamp. And I cycled there from Gravesend and back for a while rain and shine, though getting up The Avenue was hard work till I got used to it, it was so steep.

That's all for now, I hope this is of some interest to some, more to come.

Chaos At Sea.

Fred Ditty

Hi all,

Not sure if the appropriate place but can find no other. Just wanted to let Everards folks know that my dad Fred Ditty (Chief Eng) passed away last week, he retired from Everards in 2000.
