Today is the centenary of the sinking of the German barque HERA that sank after hitting the reef off the end of Gull Rock, Nare Head up the coast from Falmouth. Of the 24 crew 19 died of which 15 are buried in Veryan churchyard. A very moving memorial service was held this morning in the church at Veryan to commemorate those that died and the part the RNLI played in rescuing the 5 crew under appalling conditions. An interesting aspect was the artifacts from the wreck together with the contemporary photos and documents..
