Shoreham-by-Sea?

Shoreham-by-sea - very Long shot.

I have no idea why I should think of this now or if it is likely that anyone that knew him is still alive but I wonder if any bloggers here know of a Hardy (perhaps Hardie) who used to stay with my uncle (Dr. J.F Varley in Shoreham when on leave (apart from Southlands Hospital the only and for many years address I have is 222 Upper Shoreham Road). I have no idea of what rank although I think he was MN and not RN.

Are you sure it was 'Upper Shoreham Road' and not 'Old Shoreham Road' I have checked on 'Google maps' and there is a 222 Old Shoreham Road. I live a few miles away and worked as a boat builder in Shoreham for a few years although it is not on my Bio'

Hope this may help.

It would not be normal for there to be any Shoreham Road in Shoreham itself. You could be looking for a Shoreham Road in any of the adjoining places to the West, such as Aldrington, Southwick or Portslade, or Lancing to the West. I do vaguely remember an Upper Shoreham Road which could have been on journeys to visit Southwick Hospital.

Southwick or Southlands (his obit gives him as consultant physician at Southlands but I only remember him having been senior registrar)?

Upper Shoreham Road is easily Googlable. Several Shoreham Roads also but not in Shoreham.

I think it must have been Southlands. I cycled there from Lancing, along the coast road, over the bridge at Shoreham, then turned left and in due course found the shortest route to the hospital.
