dog class tug info

can anyone help me to find out the LAUNCHED and COMPLETED dates for the ex RMAS tug ELKHOUND ?
she ,(ELKHOUND), was definately completed in 1966 which is also the same year her sister tug (DEERHOUND) but it's the dates i'm after.
DEERHOUND was launched on the 22/2/1966 and completed in june 1966 by APPLEDORE SHIPBUILDERS Ltd.she has the makers plate number AS/15.
ELKHOUND'S makers plate is number AS/16 but exact launched and completed dates are not known and pretty hard to track down as it happens.(especially for someone like me who has little knowledge of how to go about these things on the internet).
i have always assumed that because DEERHOUND IS AS/15 , and ELKHOUND IS AS/16 , that means that DEERHOUND is the older of the two tugs.does anyone know if this is correct or am i mistaken.
any and all info greatfully recieved.
thank you for your time.
cheers
ROO.

Hi Roo, nothing to do with Your question but which "Dog Class" is in actual fact the first off the Blocks?. I'm wondering if Our Old Tug PAS Beagle/Basset was the first. I have Her very first log and that says the Portland Crew joined Her on the 7th of May 1963. She was originally launched as the PAS "Beagle" but as They wanted to name one of the New Survey vessels HMS Beagle They changed Her name to PAS Basset.

Good question tony and one i've never thought of before.
typed "build list of dog class tugs" into google and one of the options offered was a piece from MARITIME JOURNAL about the last of the dogs , (sheepdog and husky) , being sold to AKOTO VENTURES of NIGERIA from last year.
there was a brief paragraph in that article which reads as followed -
(RICHARD DUNSTON of hessle on humberside constructed the first 4 tugs AIREDALE and ALSATION in 1961, and BEAGLE (later renamed BASSET) and BOXER (later renamed FOXHOUND) in 1963.
4 more dogs came from JS DOIG Ltd in grimsby and ROWHEDGE IRONWORKS of colchester before production was passed to APPLEDORE SHIPBUILDING in 1966 , where the remaining 11 dogs were constructed).
so according to this article the original dog was either AIREDALE or ALSATION.
I personally always assumed that ALSATION was the first as she was the only one built that only had 1 telegraph but who knows.
P.S -i believe that all of the dogs (apart from POINTER ,which i've tried again and again to track down without any joy) are still working.
cheers mate.
ROO.
CHEERS for the info DAVIDJM

Thanks for that Roo. Although obviously named aftr Dogs. Perhaps there is a certain hint of Alphabetically as well to the builds?. Airedale, Alsation, Beagle/Basset, Boxer, Corgi, Cairn, Dalmation and so on. Make sense?. I'll hopefully be getting the 50 Years of Naval Tugs from my Son shortly, maybe some info in there.

Roo that,s brilliant. I can't see that You've missed anything out. So " Boxer" was also renamed ? because of the Frigate I guess.
There is a possibilty the Sandsfoot Castle EX PAS Dalmation may end up in the British Virgin Islands eventually.

i think we should start a campaign to keep the dogs that are still in this counrty haha!
maybe i should have this thread transferred to the rmas section as other ex dog crew might be able to fill in the few blanks that are left and correct any errors i have maybe made.
don't know how to shift a thread to another section.
any ideas tony ?
must admit i'm quite pleased with most of it but there is still a few gaps that need filled in and think theres more of a chance of this in the rmas section.

Hello Roo, Youv'e done a pretty good job so far Mate.
Perhaps a PM to one of the Moderators will do the honours and transfer this thread to YC/PAS/RMAS.

Airedale was launched 16 May 1961, Alsatian 27 July 1961 both by Dunston. the 3rd launch, Boxer was not launched till 12 December 1962 again by Dunston. I would expect the completion dates to tie in line with the launch dates.

Brilliant Roo, a lot of dedicated work there and thank You for it. I reckon at the launchings nobody could imagine that they would be all still working in 2014, what Great little ships they are.
