Yesterday trial

It was a great moment. Our shipyard mounted everything. Boats are from 1960. Davits from 1950 like Manxman was built. All was restored. Please look at my previous posts showing a wrecks of boats, a scrub davits and rusty winches on board of Manxman. Yes, there are the same things but after reparation and restoration. How can work 60 years old winches and davits? Who knows. How can work boars on hooks? An the last quastion - what about Bembridge's stability? It was our main concern. Even some questiond came from former pilot and younger brother of TH - so Cpt. Andrew Adams: Raf, are you sure?

How to check it? Lets try to lift up a boat a bit.

01 - 02 - so we done it - 20 cm of lifting up - piece of cake

Than how to check her stability?

03 - 05 - lets move davits away - and we done it. What was a list? not more than 5 degrees!!! Only 5 degrees. Strange filling for all sitting and working under deck. Can you imagine - you are sitting in the office and your floor has a list? Who is drunken? Nobody because only a coffee in a cup is showing you where is a real horizon.

You remember davits were reduced seriously in size, all screws reduced, basements rebuilt. And everything was perfect really!!! Impossible

Yesterday trial - part III

11 - 15 - strange ... we fill like we made a marathon, long, long time and long, long distance we made

In 2009 nobody was even dreaming about real pilot boarding boats, than we were niot even dreaming about Samuel Tylor and Sons davits, but we found them and in the same type like our originals. Please remember Tylor closed his company in 1967 - so for our time there are maybe only one davits like ours survived ...

It was really so many years ago ...

Bembridge is a lucky vessel ...

Tomorrow I will show you an official launching of our port side boat.

Best greetings

Rafal

HI RAFAL, The first Miracle was to find 2 complete Motorboats, the second was the Davits, and conversion to downsize them, the Boats look far better than i can remember them, as good as new. ! and everything to work correctly first time is a credit to your shipyard. you are correct, Bembridge is a lucky Ship, rescued in the nick of time, would not have been long befor she would have gone to the Breakers, unwanted by everyone, untill you saw Her, the transformation from the first Photos you posted is the third Miracle. am proud that in a small way i have assisted you, i hope my Photos were of help to You. am doing OK now in the Philippines, would never go back to the UK. Keep up your wonderful work, best wishes, Tony Wilding, STORES.

Launching of Port side boat - Part I

Hello Tony, thanks for a very nice comments.

Now I will show to all of you our launching. But first I will remind our beginning in case of Pilot's Tender Boats

01 - when we bought Bembridge it was a first photo showing our desired boats in action
02 - a photo showing PTB on THPV Penlee
03 - a first photo with Pilot
04 - a first photo showing Bembridge's boat on davits
05 - a first planes given to us by Cpt. Andrew Adams - a former TH Pilot. He written now a nice book which will be published by Trinity House on September

and that is all what we had in 2009. But one day Sebastian Evans written to me a mail:

06.09.2009

Hello,

I thought you may be interested to know that i have very recently acquired two ex-Trinity House pilot boarding boats that are identical to the ones that you detail on your website.

The boats that i have are in need of restoration as they have obviously been neglected since being decomissioned. My intentions are to restore the boats to their original condition and I am hoping to begin work towards the end of this month.

The photos and information that are on your website have been of great benefit to me as i have been having difficulty finding information about the boats and their history.

I have attached a photo of one of the boats for your interest.

Regards,

Sebastian Evans

So when we received such a mail it was natural story to try to acquire them. Sebastian did not wanted to offer them - it taken almost over a month to convince him - again Cpt. Adams was helping us to convince Sebastian. Sebastian is a great man - he stopped his own project and offered us his two boats with No, 44 & 46. 44 was born in 1960 and 46 in 1961. 44 was on Bembridge before in 1963, 1965 and 1967 (we have such a data from Machinery Log Books), 46 was used by other Pilot Tenders. It is a tragic accident related to 46 - on Pilot was killed by her in 60'. A wave moved a boat's board to a back of pilot stepping on pilot's ladder.

So already in 2009 we received our boats!!!!!!!!!!! Amazing!

Launching of Port side boat - Part II

When boats arrived they were looking quite well on the truck. But when we placed them on a grass next to our carpenters workshop that we found that:

1. Both shields were made from plastic and were not original
2. Decks were covered by thick rubber and under it was fully rotten deck which simply was not existing
3. Whole top of each boat was fully for rebuilding
4. Even top of frames were missing
5. Both engines were full with salt water and were covered by grass and other green elements from natural environment from UK

Generally to restore them and to restart both engines taken us over 1 year !!! 6 people were working with them daily. We were happy that we were able to acquire EU founds to cover a terrible high costs of their restoration.

Today we are 2 years from the time when they were ready. Both are dried to much and they are not able to be afloat themselves. We must make them tight. But now we have a tools to place them both to the water - before it was not possible.

Launching of Port side boat - Part III

Old Steam Ferry Manxman - she was many years in Sunderland in Palion Engineering hands. Over 2 years we were trying to buy davits. First price was so "attractive" that it was cheaper to build a new ones. We started to fight for davits only when it occurred that she will be definitely sent to breakers. So only when we were sure that nothing and nobody will safe Manxman. Finally we made a deal with breakers - so with Michael O"Brian company. He really helped us a lot. Without his personal involvement it could be impossible to get everything what we received from Manxman with great help of Michael O'Brian.

01 - when I saw her for a first time I stopped for a long moment - incredible beautiful and big vessel!!! Of course I saw many huge vessels but in a dry dock Manxman was really looking huge.

02 - 03 - she had exactly the same davits like Bembridge - even the same maker: Samuel Tylor and Sons - so columbus LUM type davits. Only Manxman had them one size bigger like Bembridge had before. Manxman's boats were ca 5 tons each. Our Pilot Tender Boats were half of it - so ca 2,5 tons. We were lucky - Samuel Tylor factory was closed in 1967 - today there is even no evidences of their activity. I am sure that there are only a few such a davits today in use. Who knows - maybe we have the last existing? How many vessels built before 1967 are in service till today? It was 45 years ago - so I am more than sure that we have original and unique davits nowadays.

We really bought a scrub - nothing was working, everything was rusty. To take apart all elements our shipyard was using torches to hit all screws and all rotating elements. First everything was sand cleaned and later on slowly every element was landing on tables to be checked and repaired. It taken 2 months of hard job to convert them to smaller size and to make everything perfectly working.

On a last picture you can see a restored PTB and restored davits - view from stern.

I can only tell you that in 2009 when we bought Bembridge nobody was even dreams that one day original PTB, davits, winches and steering boxes will return on her deck.

Bembridge is a lucky vessel. There is a certain spirit, something on her deck constantly surviving her, helping her to exist. Somebody can say - it is just a steel riveted vessel. But how lucky vessel?

02 - 06 - and finally on the water - it was for a short moment - boat is quite dry - so immediately when boat was in the water - than water started to flow inside by all possible cracks. So after one or two minutes we were forced to lift them up.

Anyway it was a great moment really!!!

A second pair of davits

Hello,

Again something new - this time a stern davits for our lift boats:

01 - Original davits were made from forget steel and each of them had a weight of several tons - definitively any original davits will be to heavy for our project.

02 - Their basements were located on lower deck - so one deck below this one. They were going via boat deck to do over it and to turn over our life boats

03 - Our new davits are looking as original ones

04 - For a maritime newcomer it will be not possible to realise that we have a fake davits

05 - instead of heavy forget steel they are made from light pipes

To make such an arch is taking a long time but our shipyard Wega Bis did it with great success.

A second pair of davits - part II

06 - and in such way we received a new davits for our boats

07 - no doubts that our stern received a new look

08 - soon we will take out all pipes and all elements from our boats to make them flat

09 - each will be cleaned and painted black just to imitate a wooden boats

10 - later on each will get own tarpaulin. They are from 1970 and they were made to look like a wooden ones. So that is why they are perfect for our project. Both of them have working engines. So maybe one day ... but definitively we can not use these davits.

Soon more ...

Best greetings Rafal

Hello Hugh

Yes, indeed. It is the same vessel - deck is unfortunately completely new but made from the same wood and is looking the same like an old one.

It was so many years ago - more then I live !!! I will be this year only 44.

For a moment more news concerning our preparations for The Tall Ships Races ...

Best greetings Rafal

The Tall Ships Races 2013 in Szczecin - preparations part IV

Next part dedicated to our preparations for a great event so TTSR 2013

When you will look at the old pictures of THPV Bembridge you can see two black boards on her stern with words:

TWIN SCREWS
KEEP CLEAR
PROPELLERS

1 - Kamil is painting wooden planks by special clear primer and Christopher is connecting everything in one unit
2 - our board artist Andrew is starting his job. A whole poster were printed on our board printer A0 bought for our EU founds.
3 - when all letters were cut off than Andrew taken of whole paper. Than under on black painted background were visible traces made by thin knife. All these traces were corrected by pencil. Later on be a small pencil and white paint Andrew made shapes of all letters. On the end 3 layers of white paint covered black background.
4 - and at evening time
5 - our job was ready.

The Tall Ships Races 2013 in Szczecin - preparations part V

Now the most famous black boards on Bembridge visible on all old pictures:

01 - Again our bosun Christopher made two wooden boards with dimensions of 335 x 90 cm, painted it by primer and later on by black paint
02 - Later on Aga and Andrew joined him to paint next 2 times
03 - the final painting was made by Andrew
04 - Later on both boards were moved to Pilot Saloon where I cut off all letters from big paper print - of course we selected all fonts the same like in 1938
05 - Later on our kids started their job - so by using a small sponges and brushes they painted all letters 3 times - on the picture you can see Ola (my daughter) and Damian (Andrew's son)

The Tall Ships Races 2013 in Szczecin - preparations part VI

Pilot's board - part II

06 - later we removed slowly all cut letters and we mounted whole paper form by tapes - just to paint everything carefully - on the picture you can see a father and son
07 - a last corrections were made by our board's artist Andrew and ... we started to admire our job
08 - I can made a deal with everybody that our boards are better made like originals in 1938! But the most important story is that on Monday all 4 will be placed to our superstructure and aft railings.
09 - and now a real field test
10 - it is really looking great!!! Again Bembridge is a real pilot cutter, again after 43 years. She lost all pilots marking in December 1970 when she was bought by Eric St-John Foti who made from her private yacht and The Sea Training School.

Hugh, all with special dedication to you personally. How do you feel?

Soon more ....

The Tall Ships Races 2013 in Szczecin - preparations part VII

Now our life boats being already black.

I was publishing photos of our life bats with new tarpaulins. Two days before TTSR 2013 we painted them black. Before they had terrible pink colour characteristic for rescue equipment. We cleaned them by sand paper, thinner and than epoxy paint covered twice both boats. Yes, they are plastic ducks but because they are from beginning of 70' they have a shape characteristic for wooden boats.

1-2 - They are exactly the same size like Bembridge's originals and they have a flat sterns like originals. For non experienced people no chance to distinguish :-)
3-4 we had no time left to give them a stands
5 - at evening time they are looking great too

As you can see we painted white our new davits and we placed to davits old ropes - of course it is not looking so professional but from the berth looks as connected elements. We will arrange some blocks and hooks in the future on any scrub - so one day it will be made in really professional way.

Very flattered, Rafal, in fact I feel honoured!! You've turned the clock back for me. If I close my eyes and dream a little I can almost think I am 31 again which is how young I was when I first trod those decks

Bembridge's Bell - a GREAT RETURN HOME! part I

I guess now Hugh will be happy once again ...

01. After few months of awaiting finally we were visited by very important guests - Mrs. Silvia Oliver arrived with her son Jonathan.

02. There was a very heavy package in her bag. She was packing it together with her son using many insulating materials still staying in her home after last renovation. Unpacking of her bag attracted our journalists being in contact with our vessel

03. It is a bell, an original bell from Bembridge - it was installed on Bembridge on 29.09.1938 - just after her sea trails and it was taken away in 1969 when Trinity House decided to cancel all 4 cruising pilot cutters from their duties. The successful introduction of an all launch service at the Needles in 1960 paved the way for further launch services and in 1967 Bembridge was anchored off Folkestone as a ‘mother ship’ and communications station whilst the shore pilot station was being constructed in Folkestone Harbour.
So not by coincidence her bell finally landed in Folkestone - a new built Pilot Station with a great help of THPV Bembridge.

04. Bell is massive and beautiful. It was made only in one piece. Other bells for the next after Bembridge different pilot cutters were a standard ones - they were bought as ready units and only later on engraved by the name of Cutter and a year of its commissioning by Trinity House. So our bell is really very special and beautiful.

05. Mrs. Sylvia Oliver is ringing the bell. Sound is really fantastic.
