Amazing how the designs have changed with the years..I wonder how many ferries of that design were built around the world, now the only thing that seems to matter is size...and certainly not looks!!.

I went on the Ionic a few times, when it went from Cairnryan to Larne, and the last time when it berthed in Zebrugge, i remember the cabin so clearly, the shower had a huge hole in the middle.

Hi Louise

The Ionic Ferry that you was on in Cairnryan is not this one. This one was built in 1958 and was sold off in 1976. (see link)
http://www.faktaomfartyg.se/ionic_ferry_1958.htm

The Ionic Ferry that was in Cairnyran at about the time you were onboard was built as the 'Dragon' in 1967 for P&O Ferries, running out of Southampton. (see link)
http://www.faktaomfartyg.se/dragon_1967.htm

I don't think see was ever in Zeebrugge. Neither do I remember any crew cabins having showers in them. They were in a block down the alleyway. Although some may have had them. Remember the brown water from them? Maybe there are other ex crew members of this ship who may remember her either as the Dragon or Ionic. I only did a week on this ship when I was on the Baltic. She went to drydock and 8 catering crew went North to Cairnryan, 3 on the Europic and 5 on the Ionic.

Do you remember Maria Adamson from this ship?

Regards
Karl

Atlantic Steam built six ships of this design. Bardic, Ionic, Cerdic, Doric, Gaelic & Europic Ferry's. Only the two middle ships are still around, converted to passenger ships, although one is laid up. A New Zealand company built one of similar design and called her 'Wanaka'. She may have had a sister.

Karl

Didn't the Ionic Ferry and Bardic Ferry sail between Preston and Larne in the 1960's?

I joined the ionic (dragon) the first time in carinryan - my 2nd ship after the baltic karl, i worked in the galley as potwash, and had to peel a sack of spuds a day by hand I hated it. But although she was a rustbucket the weekend layovers in larne were pretty good.
I left the ionic in zeebrugge after the doric became the flanders, then eventually it disappeared and was replaced by the rathlin and ailsa. I can still see the cabin i had, and still remember what the ship was like. Memories eh?
