Buries Marks La Hortensia

I joined the LA HORTENSIA in TOULON FRANCE 2-4 -61 new ship.
supposed to be 3-4 month voyag.Once through the PANAMA CANAL
That was it paid off GENOA ON 4-4-62 15 MONTHS later. Did a lot off
tramping finished up (charter.)between Japan & States cargo logs
tree trunks. Big workup all the bark down the holds.We did not come
home with original crew (skinned out) Any of the crew out there.?

Hi Artie,
I joined the LA HORTENSIA as a deck apprentice on 22.4.1965 and paid off on 4. 12. 1965.
We took sugar from Havana to Shanghai and Wampoa. Rice to Prince Rupert, Canada, then back to China for rice bound for Cuba and so on. We were continuously buzzed and threatened by American aircraft off Cuba....I think they thought we were Russian!
Not a bad ship just a very eventfull time.
Have you looked at the web site about Buries Markes.....Lots of good photo's

I joined the La Hortensia in Falmouth as 3rd engineer around 1964. She had a very good main engine (Gotavekan), not so good generators, they had a bad habit of leaking cooling water into the crankcase. The drinking water was badly polluted, all the engineers went down with the chinese quickstep. The engineers toilets also had a bad habit of blowing back, culminating in a huge eruption that would flood the whole washroom, (french plumbing!). I was glad to get off her. The 2nd mate was known as the red rooster, smashing bloke, he had an apple tree in his cabin, he also kept a pair of giant African land snails that cruised around his cabin. While we were up the Seine he was terrified that the Frenchies were going to steal them. I found out that she was on charter to the red chinese, probably why Artie was buzzed by the Yanks

Buries Marks old La Sierra

does anyone know any website or have any info on La Sierra of the 1940-50 - 60s with the bridge amidships?? - am also after a pic of the Burries Markes Flag - thanks - cheers Jay

I agree she was a good ship, I was Master from July 62 july 63. Many good memories. Jack Keeler 3rd Engineer is here in BC.

Artie (or anyone else that can provide the answer),

What was the reason for the small size of the No.3 Hatch? The other 4 hatches all seem to be of equal size and much larger than No.3. Can't think why but maybe someone here can explain.

DF, ESD,GyC, Radar. Code flags MFRF. 1 deck & shelter deck. 3rd deck in No;3 hold. Part electrically welded. Cruiser stern.Registered London. British flag.

Hi Ron,
I was Mate on a sister ship built at La Seyne.Think these were the ones with side tanks in No 3..May be wrong ,it was some time ago. Ron Maddison was Master,We were not quite completed at hand over but John Mann chased us out and we sailed without stores or enough food.Hard man,hard times.!!!

Hi Artie

Just a little bit more info about the 1950 La Sierra, she was sold Nigerian National Shipping Line in 1959 and renamed Dan Fodio. She remained with them until at least 1967 but don't have in subsequent information.

Me again with a bit more history

1950 La Sierra as Dan Fodio was sold on in 1974 to S.C. Vazeos and renamed Fos. In 1978 renamed Kronos then Kronos II (same owners?). 10/1978 broken up at Gadani Beach

La Hortensia...yes I remember maiden voyage and sea trial as I was 4th Engineer then and for the duration of her maiden voyage,paying off in Genoa.If you are able drop me a line.

Hi, found this site while doing some research while writing my memoirs. I was on the La Hortensia in 66 and first came to Vancouver on her, my current home. I was wondering if you could help out with information regarding the La Hortensia, date she was built, tonnage and what happened to her and when. Not sure if I can get on this site again as am connected to the internet by a sim card but can possibly be reached by PM thanks

The Hortensia was long before my time. Only did one trip with Buries Markes, on the La Primavera in 1985 - just before it was sold to a Japanese company. It was Japanese built and by some distance the best built and most reliable engine room I ever experienced.
