The Cita of 3,083 tons struck the rocks at Newfoundland Point St. Mary's Scilly Isles at 3.30 a.m. on 26 March 1997. The St. Mary's Lifeboat took of 7 of her crew. The Cita survived for 12 days before breaking in two. Every gale for the next 5 years brought new cargo washed up on the beaches.
