I was attending a company internal seminar this last weekend and on looking out of my 5-star hotel window was confronted by this rather strange monument that cost a mint and had the whole town up in arms after its completion. The pic ain't too great, lousy weather and thick double-glazing, but you should be able to make out someone stood on the deck of a sailing ship.

Who was the intrepid gentleman.....and.....

in what place was my hotel?

Or if you really feel keen, name me the river upon which this crap 'sails'.

I don't believe it!! Spot on R58.....
Had no idea that this piece of sculpture was so well known.
And yes, it was more than Brass Monkey weather -32°C...even titanium ones would have frozen off!!!

If my memory serves me correctly, on the stem of the monument there are " prows " indicating the number of enemy--Swedish?--ships that were sunk by the Russian Navy.
I think it is quite striking and typically Russian of that time. Had a great time when I was over there. changed for the worse I fear !
