Some years ago wrote to a plastic kit dealer to see if
they had a Southern Cross model to sell for a customer,
received a poncey, scrawled message back on my letter
’you‘ ll be lucky ,only 3 known in the world..’!
I returned letter with another scrawled note saying.’ rubbish,
I’ve got 2 plus spare funnel ‘.…the funnel all that remains
from model made up ,rather badly!, when as a youth model
first came out ,1957c?
the other two still have, one not made up, one very well done
in glazed case bought recently from friendly mutual antique
dealer/runner.
when sailing on the real Cross as 3rd Purser in 1968, (happy
voyage, happy ship ) am sure the kit was sold in the ship’s
shop, as I bought another then to be sure?
The other rare Airfix at the time was of a Ferguson tractor..!

Hi Martyn
The model itself is approx 15” long, the cased one I have must
say has been very well built..
Perhaps why only have the funnel of one I had at about 15
is maybe tried to float it in a pond….it sank..! It did come with
a metal bar to fit inside to add ‘stability’, didn’t work.!!
Did hear rumours of mould being found for possible
reissue, but nothing materialised ?

Googling suggests that Everest models produced a new mould or test moulding, but that nothing was released. There is a brief entry on the Everest models website. Don't know if it's the same firm, but there is a Chinese Everest models who make all sorts of mouldings, I have known about the firm (But not the Southern Cross) through my model railway interests. Probably not the same firm, as it seems to be a general model shop, and re-reading the entry about the Cross,, it's a bit confusing......

It seems as if some one at Everest has done a test build of the original kit, but I'm not sure.

It must be an impressive model at that size; again, Google throws up links to various websites with photos and history of the model. Seemingly only produce from 1956 to 58 or thereabouts, and one website suggests with 'third party interest as promotional material'.

Southern Cross never had a swimming pool in this location, the main swimming pool and childrens pool was forward of the bridge. This is not an accurate model of Shaw Savill's Southern Cross, Jamie Shedden, Shaw Savill Society, NZ

the attached images are confusing - as the 1st shows the s/cross original forward of the funnel and later the ocean breeze at the same place ? and the last the indoor pool
